Getting started

What is Booknest?

A place to keep track of the paper books you actually own. Scan the barcode on the back cover, and the title, author, and cover fill themselves in. From there you can track what you're reading, rate it, take notes, and see how your year went.

How do I add a book?

Three ways, all in the app:

Scan a barcode — point the camera at the ISBN barcode on the back cover. You can scan several books in a row and confirm them all at once.
Search by title or author — if the barcode is worn, missing, or the book is older than barcodes.
Enter it yourself — for anything the first two can't find. Signed copies, self-published books, family heirlooms.

The barcode won't scan

Make sure you're pointing at the ISBN barcode (the one starting with 978 or 979), not a price sticker or a library label.
Move a little further back and let the camera focus. Tap the torch icon in dim light.
Very old books have no barcode at all. Search by title, or enter it by hand.

It scanned, but says the book wasn't found

The barcode was read fine — the book just isn't in the databases Booknest searches. Tap through to manual entry and the ISBN will already be filled in for you.

The title or cover is wrong

Open the book, tap Edit, and change any field. You can also replace the cover with a photo from your own library — useful for a specific edition, or a book you'd rather remember by its real, worn cover.
